Wine Cellar Inspirations: Terms To Learn In Wine Cellar Construction

Embarking on your very first wine cellar project? Then there are terms that you will encounter that might not make a lot of sense. So it’s definitely a good idea to enrich your wine cellar construction vocabulary. Here some terms that you need to get acquainted with. They will shed a lot of light on the construction process. The added knowledge will let you arrive at the best decisions concerning your wine cellar.

Build your wine cellar the right way!
Studs and Soffits

Studs need to be installed if it is a newly built wine cellar. You will need to “stud the space” in order to frame out your wine cellar project. You usually start by sealing the concrete foundation walls prior to installing studs. Soffits are basically used to cover ducting, piping, or other obstructions. Take note that the lighting installed in the soffit should be placed far enough away. This is so that it will not interfere with the finished racking and/or ducting depth. That includes the depth of crown molding. A good rule of thumb to follow is to leave a 1-inch gap from the front of the crown molding to the closest edge of the ring on the can light. It is recommended to use IC can lights so you can insulate around them.

Make sure you pick the right kind of wood for your racks!
Plain Sawn vs Quarter Sawn Lumber

When choosing wood for your wine racks, these two terminologies can come in handy. Plain sawn lumber is one that is sawed parallel to the annual growth rings. This practice makes the wood visually appealing. Moreover, it makes it easier to produce from a log and gives it a varied grain appearance. Here at WCI, plain sawn lumber is the standard offering for our wood options. In contrast, quarter sawn lumber is one that is sawed perpendicular to the annual growth rings. In doing this, the wood really can really showcase its grain patterns. That’s why this method is sometimes requested in hardwoods. Keep in mind that material costs are higher for woods sawn in this technique. This is also part of the “customization” that WCI can do for clients upon request.

There are various rail options to choose from!
SB Rail, Beveled Rail, and Molding Rail

It is important to know how a wine racking unit is structured to ensure the safety of your bottles. Naturally, it should also be aesthetically pleasing. The various racking “series” here at WCI also have different kinds of rails to support the wine bottles. Learning more about these will aid you in selecting the most suitable one for your collection. The SB Rail is one that is used at all locations where a spacer bar will be placed. It is square-cut and recessed to create a snug fit. The Beveled Rail is tops in aesthetics and helps keep label tearing to a minimum. Our Vintner Series utilizes this type of rail. Lastly, there’s the Molding Rail. This is flush mounted to the front of a rack, leaving no gaps when molding is applied.

A doorway discreetly set into a circular stone wall leads into this moody subterranean wine cellar that architect Kerstin Thompson has created at Australia's TarraWarra vineyard.

The Cellar Door is located on the Tarrawarra Estate – a vineyard covering 400 acres of farmland in the Yarra Valley, around an hour east of Melbourne.

Melbourne architect Kerstin Thompson – who has previously designed a house with a rhomboid-shaped roof and a timber-lined Aesop store – was tasked with adding a private dining room, bar and lounge to the estate’s existing amenities.

The Cellar Door is located in an extension to an existing barrel cellar. It features a design that seeks to combine an experience of the Australian landscape with "the subterranean charm of a European wine cellar".

Visitors enter the space through a wooden door inserted into a stone wall that curves around a sheltered forecourt. A pathway connects the main winery building with the forecourt, which looks out onto the Yarra Valley.

The building's roof is planted so the cellar appears to merge with the landscape.

Projecting from the grassy surface are a group of black funnels that direct daylight into the otherwise dark interior, where visitors can dine or participate in wine tastings.

"Imagined as warm and inviting in winter and a place of cool relief in summer, pools of natural light from above in combination with niche wall lights celebrate the subterranean character so defining of the tradition of the wine cellar and its ambience," the studio suggested.

The interior employs a palette of materials chosen to accentuate the sights and smells associated with wine making.

Textured concrete, wooden joinery and furniture made from recycled timber complement the mood and materials found in typical wine cellars.

The entrance opens onto a reception area containing a long wooden counter and a bar for stand-up tastings, which is illuminated from above by one of the skylights.

A large opening at the far end of this space frames a view of the vines and brings more daylight into the room, where armchairs and a table create an informal lounge.

A curtain separates the reception and tasting area from a private dining space where more formal tastings are also conducted. Its entirely glazed end wall provides views of the adjacent barrel store.

Wooden shelves inserted into the concrete walls display bottles, while narrow recesses contain concealed lighting that adds to the space’s intimate ambience.

"The challenge of the project involved responding to existing conditions and forging a new space that was at once in keeping with the character and feel of the existing winery tunnel, while also providing a heightened sense of refinement and identity for showcasing the wine," the studio added.

Wine Cellar Inspirations: Beautiful Wine Cellar Decorative Pieces

We’re just a little over a week from bidding goodbye to the month of love. But that doesn’t mean we can’t continue to spread the love around – especially with wine lovers everywhere. And of course, when we talk about love, we also relate that to beauty. So today, we decided to share some beautiful decorative pieces for your wine cellar projects. Check them out and let us know which ones are your faves:

Stunning, custom Cigar Humidors

To be completely honest, we think that every formal, decent-sized wine cellar should have a cigar humidor. The After all, there are more than just a few wine lovers out there who are also cigar lovers as well. So why not house your two favorites in just one space? A custom-built cigar humidor designed to your specifications will make an eye-catching addition to your wine cellar. This specialized cabinet will be able to hold fine (and expensive!) cigars, cigarettes, or pipe tobacco. Note that just like a refrigerated wine cabinet, the humidor is usually kept to a certain degree of humidity. This helps keep the cigars in perfect condition. With a custom wine cellar already maintaining a certain temperature and humidity level, it’s a smart way to be sure your investments are made safe.

Fancy Tasting Tables

Now tasting tables are actually common accessories in wine rooms. But don’t go buying just any tasting table. If you want to add a more fanciful flair to your wine cellar, have it custom-made. That way, you will have command of the choice of materials that will make the table a sure eye-candy. One good example would be to customize the tabletop option. There are lots of gorgeous materials you can use such as hand-painted tiles, tumbled stone, and mosaic. But two of our favorites are the Vintage Wine Barrel Tabletops and Corian. If the budget permits, you can have matching surfaces for the countertops in your racking assembly as well.

Elegant Humidification Fountains

Floor Fountain

Humidification Fountains help maintain the ideal storage conditions in a wine room. Keep in mind that around 55-75% relative humidity, along with a temperature range of 55-58 degrees must always be maintained 24/7. These conditions serve to create a cool and damp environment necessary for bottles to age at a graceful pace. The best thing about these fountains is that they serve an aesthetic purpose as well. There are so many gorgeous designs to choose from, as well as sizes. You can go for the basin or tabletop units or the luxurious floor fountains.
